Friday morning August 12th around 9:00 am the fire department responded to Rt. 46 and Smithtown Rd. for a report of a gas line struck by a contractor. Crews arrived and started to shut down rt. 46, Smithtown and Wolf roads as well as evacuating the Equity Plaza shopping mall and Engine 53 stretched a hose line as a precaution. The contractor struck a 4 “gas line while digging for some traffic light work Elizabethtown Gas was notified and they had the gas shut down within an hour. The Morris county Haz-Mat crews were also on hand to monitor the air in the area. The highway was reopened in an hour and a half.
